Haywood Oaks 30km Novice Competitive Ride Report

Unusually for an Easter Bank Holiday weekend the weather was exceptionally pleasant and late spring like with temperatures in the teens and sunshine abounding. Considering three weeks ago the weather in the same area had given us Blizzard like conditions. The EGB Haywood Oaks Ride organising committee of Sue Broughton, Carol Burnell, Yvonne Clark, Deb Bennett and S Smith must have been very pleased with there timing..

Set over forestry tracks and within Thorseby Park, the good going offered by this course allows for fast ride times, so riding a novice meant I would have to keep an eye on the speed we were travelling so as not to exceed the upper limit of 12kph.. The one bright point was Dylan putting in a foot perfect performance, while escorting Millie a 10 year old in her 2nd EGB competitive ride on her thirteen year old welsh section b pony. I was very surprised to find that he could canter while the pony was trotting. We walked the last 200yds in to the finish, I hopped off walked over to the trailer loosening his girth. We removed his saddle poured three slosh bottles over him and went straight to the vet arriving before our vetting sheet again and vetted sound with a heart rate of 47. I would just like to add a thank you to all of those involved in the organising and running of this event and the land owners without whose permission this event could not take place.

Below are my heart rate monitor GPS readings from this ride.
